A Message from the Chairman of the Board, Dr. Douglas Jorgensen:

What a tremendous time in medicine! No, honestly—I mean it. Here we sit on the precipice of a new dawn where technology and compassionate care will eliminate knowledge and communication deficits among doctors and patients. We can rapidly identify patients needing medical intervention before the fatal myocardial infarction or stroke. Moreover, we can look at our patients—all of them, not just the ones we see regularly—and get an authentic, albeit sobering look at how we are doing in helping them manage their diabetes, blood pressure or even staying on top of recurrent monitoring cancer or cell counts.

Yes, this is an exciting time, but with this excitement comes anticipation and worry due to inevitable change. Will the technology work? Can we meet the needs and expectations of our patients let alone the private and federal payers watching what we are doing? I believe we can. We must. For the sake of our patients and for the survival of the healthcare system at large we must not sit on our laurels and reminisce the glory days of medicine, but rather embrace this change in how we care for patients. Patients want it. Insurers want it—heck both are pretty much demanding it so why not commence with it? Our patients benefit. It pays well and we can truly practice comprehensive, holistic care in a financially feasible model. How cool is that?

There will continue to be the prior authorizations, the ever shifting preferred drug lists as well as new CPT codes and the impending ICD-10 changes. Regardless, the opportunity before us to do good and to do well has never been better. I may be a bit anxious about the unknown, but the real effects—the ones that matter—will result in better care for my patients and after all is said and done isn’t that why we went into medicine in the first place?
