Like it or not, health care reform is coming... and the sentiment in Washington is that the burden is going to rest on your shoulders. We might see minor changes for insurers, and we've already witnessed a call to tax medical equipment manufacturers.
But, the main thrust of health care reform will be directed towards you, the private practice physician. They'll ask you to "prove" your value, and take away your patients if your grade is too low. Then, they'll place even more limitations on what you can and can't do with your patients. To top it off, if they pull anything away from European systems, it will be evidence that doctors in the U.S. are overpaid.
Health care reforms like Pay for Performance (P4P) will impact you and your livelihood as a doctor. While the onus of cost cutting and universal coverage should be on the insurance industry, which has five times the administrative overhead of comparable plans in Europe, you are a much easier target.
